Chihuahua Temperament

vet Seminole, FL

Chihuahuas are pretty much like terriers. These dogs are very alert, confident, and bold.  You could say that they are a bit obsessively devoted to one person, making some sort of imprint on this person and following him/her as their Alpha.  Make sure quality time is spent with your pup, to keep them happy.  You don’t want your tiny dog to be unhappy, as they bark a lot (for their size) and make good watchdogs.   You could say that Chihuahuas are temperamental dogs, easily snapping at children or strangers who might be intimidating to them. Moreover, they are considered one of the intelligent dog breeds.  They are highly trainable and with proper training and socialization at an early age, they could become a well-rounded dog for your family.

However, they aren’t recommended for homes with small children, their cries might be overwhelming for your dog.  Chihuahuas need serenity and calmness in their environment.

Chihuahuas like other small dog breeds are vulnerable to health problems.  They need regular tooth brushing so feed him the right dog foods and start giving him dental chews.  Tracheal collapse is something plaguing small dog breeds.  Don’t use a regular leash as this will put pressure on their neck.

Instead, find a body harness that distributes the pressure of a leash along his body.  Other common problems with Chihuahuas are luxating patella (kneecap issues), infections in the eyes, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).  Make sure to give your chihuahuas regular baths, ear cleaning, teeth brushing, and grooming.  More frequent brushing will be needed for the long-haired chihuahua variants.
