Can Cats Swim?

Cats might not take to water right away because evolutionarily speaking, their forerunners made their life in desert areas. Because of this, they do not need much water and do not like being around bodies of water.

But this aversion to water does not mean that a cat cannot swim. Most people who own cats are quite surprised to know that their pet cat has the ability to swim. Should your cat somehow fall into a swimming pool, there is no need to panic and rescue her right away. There is a possibility that she could swim to safety.

Even if cats do not like water as much as humans do, cats nevertheless still have innate survival instincts, like how to react when being in a body of water. A cat can use her paws as paddles like how dogs do it. But dogs on the other hand love the water and possess better reflexes when in or around water.
