The ASOT (American Society of Ocular Trauma) and the AAO (American Academy of Ophthalmology) conducted their 5th annual Eye Injury Snapshot and there are the interesting things they have uncovered about eye injuries:

  • A lot of people think that injuries to the eyes commonly happen while at work, most especially in construction sites and in factories.  However, close to 50% of all injuries to the eyes happen at home.
  • Cooking, cleaning, yard work, and home repairs are the cause of over 40% of injuries to the eyes.  Over one-third of these injuries happen in the family room, living room, bathroom, bedroom, or kitchen.
  • Over 40% of injuries to the eyes that happen annually are linked to recreational activities or sports.
  • Over 78% of the people who injured their eyes were not using protective eye gear at that time.  Only around 5% of the ones wearing eyewear like contact lenses or glasses, were wearing sports or safety glasses.
  • Men more than women are known to be more likely to injure their eyes.
  • The sun could damage your eyes as would dust, objects, and chemicals.  When outdoors, always be wearing sunglasses or the UP-protection goggles appropriate to the specific sport (ski goggles, for example)
  • In almost any country, urban warfare, protests, and riots are things that can increase the likelihood of eye injuries that threaten your vision.
