When you place cats in clean litter boxes, most of them already know what they should do. With kittens, try gently taking a paw and guide it making scraping motions on the litter. Should her instinct fail to take over, try keeping her inside a confined area together with her litter box until such time she does use it. For dogs, timing and also crate training will help a lot. Remember to offer praise and rewards for good behavior enthusiastically.
