Winter Pet Safety

Keep Your Pets Warm, Happy and Healthy with These Winter Safety Tips! | ASPCA

The winter season is perfect for sledding and building snowmen by day and snuggling by the fireplace at night. However, winter also poses some new obstacles for our pet dogs. Temperatures in cold and snowy places may be deadly, especially for dog breeds that are not tolerant of the winter cold. Furthermore, some typical cold-weather goods can be harmful. Below are some pointers to keep everyone safe throughout the winter months:

•  Watch out for antifreeze automobile fluids, as these are toxic to animals. While walking your dog, avoid pools of automobile fluids, avoid going to automotive areas and keep your pet out of the garage. According to the ASPCA, utilizing propylene glycol-based products is better than ethylene glycol-based ones.

•  Ice-melting agents can get lodged in your pet’s feet, so it is best to wipe the paws before your dog attempts to remove the de-icing products by licking. Snow and ice can also cause paw pads to bleed, so ensure your pet is wearing booties if you take it dog for a walk. Also, when your dog comes in from the cold, wipe down its paws, legs, and stomach.

If your pet is showing signs of hypothermia, contact your veterinary clinic Urbana, IL immediately.
