DIY: Detangling Your Dog’s Matted Hair

Some dog breeds are known to be more susceptible to matted fur coats. It may be due to their long fur coats, or dogs who are shedding their puppy coat and growing into their mature fur. It may also be the result of humid or rainy weather that causes frizzy fur.

To prevent the matting from happening, you must frequently brush your dog’s coat. It applies greatly to long-haired dogs that must be brushed three to five times per week. For short-furred dogs, brushing can be done only two to three times per week.

Undercoat rake. When you have a dog that has short and long fur (collie or golden retriever), you can use this to prevent any matting.

Comb. For stubborn matting, you can use a comb with sharp and long heavy teeth to break it all up. Use it carefully to prevent harming your pup or yourself.

Mat splitter. It is a one-sided bladed, and when used, you have to do a sawing motion to remove the mats. Make sure that you saw going away from your dog.
Any skin and/or hair coat issue exhibited by your pet should warrant an appointment with your veterinary clinic Columbia MD.
