All About Basset Hounds

Basset Hound standing in the garden.

“Basset” came from the word “bas,” which means “low” in French— true to the word, Basset Hounds are short. With their heavy bones and muscular body, Bassets weigh 50-65 pounds even though their height only reaches 14 inches. It’s safe to say they have big bodies with short legs. These short legs are caused by achondroplasia dwarfism. Although they are large dogs, Basset Hounds think they are lap dogs and will therefore do everything to fit on your lap.

Basset dogs are scent hounds, getting their target by tracking the scent of potential prey. They have an excellent sense of scent, which ranks second to the Bloodhound.

They are easy to groom with their short, smooth, hard-textured coats. They may come in the following colors:

●Tricolor (white, black, and tan)

●Open red-and-white (white coat with red spots)

●Closed red-and-white (solid red but white on the tail and feet)

●Lemon-and-white

●Gray or blue (deemed negative and associated with genetic diseases)
