House rabbits can’t dig or do anything to wear down claws, so their nails tend to get too long. But keeping their nails at the right length is essential, as long nails can cause discomfort— the nails may curl into the feet or gash on something.
However, clipping a rabbit’s nails may be a hassle. But going to the vet can be costly, so it’s still a wise decision to learn to do it yourself:
●Wrap a towel around your rabbit to isolate the paws and restrain her from moving.
●Check where the vein (quick) is to know what to avoid during nail trimming. Failure to avoid the quick may cause pain and bleeding. A flashlight is helpful in locating the quick especially for rabbits with dark-colored nails. If bleeding occurs, use styptic powder or flour to stop it.
●Don’t get surprised if the clipper’s sound startles your bunny. In this case, simply file down the nails. It may take longer, though, especially if the nails are too long.
You may also ask your veterinarian Louisville, KY or groomer to show you how it’s properly done.
