Cairn Terrier Personality

Cairn Terriers are friendly and cheerful dogs who enjoy being around people. They are terriers with terrier characteristics— tough, independent, and alert. As with all dogs, they enjoy barking, digging, and chasing. They’ll chase smaller animals, and this includes your neighbor’s cat. They also make excellent watchdogs and will let you know if there’s a visitor.

Despite their independence, Cairns are devoted family members. They love to be at home and get involved in their people’s day-to-day lives— playing, greeting, and following everyone. Cairn Terriers are sensitive, and they don’t do well when you scold them or their people don’t seem happy with them.

Heredity, socialization, training, and many other factors affect a dog’s temperament. Nice-tempered puppies are playful, inquisitive, and love to be held. Opt for pups whose personality lies in the middle of the spectrum— not those who are likely to start a fight or just hide somewhere.
