Chesapeake Bay Retrievers Has A Water-Resistant Hair Coat

As water retrievers, Chessies have water-resistant coats— like ducks. This breed has a short, harsh, thick, and oily topcoat, and under it is a dense, woolly, and fine coat— both providing excellent insulation to let them hunt even in icy conditions. Their wooly undercoats and oily topcoats protect them from cold water, so Chessies can immediately dry themselves by shaking up their bodies after soaking in the water.

As with many retrievers, Chessies shed a lot. Their coats need weekly brushing, in which you need rubber curry brushes that will remove your dog’s dead hair and spread his skin oils evenly around his body. Regularly brushing your dog helps in controlling the number of hairs messing around your stuff at home. Just be sure to never use wire slickers and coat rakes, as these items may easily break a Chessie’s curly and wavy hair.

Any skin and/or hair coat issue exhibited by your pet should warrant an appointment with your animal clinic Cornelius, NC.
