Not many people recognize the Smooth Fox Terrier outside dog shows and hunting circles, where they’re mostly seen today. However, these dogs are believed to be the ancestor of many terrier breeds, which makes them nevertheless important. In addition, in 1975, the Foxys (as they are also called) became the first fox terrier breed to get official recognition from EKC (England’s Kennel Club).
Back then, Fox Terriers would bolt foxes before they even got inside the hiding place, which then helped hunters and foxhounds to capture the fox. While White Smooth Foxys are known because they’re the least likely to get mistaken for a fox, Wires are the ideal hunting partners in rough environments due to their less vulnerable coats. Many Fox Terriers do not work in the hunting field anymore, but their prey drive is still strong. Don’t get surprised if you see your dog digging tirelessly in search of an underground vermin.
