When Should I Take My Sick Dog to the Vet?

So you’re out for a walk with your dog, and suddenly he starts to limp. His tongue is hanging out of his mouth, and he’s panting heavily.

You’ve probably been through this before—you’ve had to take your dog into the vet for stitches or antibiotics or just plain old love. It’s not always easy to know when it’s time to make that call, though.

Here are some signs that your dog needs emergency medical care:

  • He is bleeding from anywhere on his body (including his nose)
  • Your dog has broken bones or serious cuts that require stitches
  • He is having trouble breathing due to an injury like a puncture wound or choke collar around his neck
  • He has swallowed something dangerous like a piece of wire (This one can be tricky: sometimes dogs swallow things they shouldn’t and don’t seem injured at first glance, but if they get into something sharp like glass or metal, they could have internal bleeding.)
  • His is vomiting repeatedly
  • He has diarrhea that lasts longer than 24 hours or gets worse after 48 hours

If any of these things happen while you’re out walking with your pooch—or if you notice them happening at any other time—please don’t hesitate: call us, your veterinary clinic Cornelius, NC immediately!
