Not every newborn Dalmatian is pure white— some patches of dense masses of brilliant black/liver color, without white hairs, can be present. These patches are smooth, have well-defined edges, and are larger than the regular spots.
Aside from patches, there may also be a large mass of a color, which is formed by intermingling/overlapping spots. This kind of patch can be easily distinguished from the first mentioned patch, with the former having scattered white hairs or uneven edges. Dalmatians with these patches aren’t supposed to be in the ring, although they can be performance and companion dogs.
Dalmatians are generally clean with their dirt-repellent coats and lack of doggy odor; not to mention they’re not fond of rolling in the dirt. Bathing should be minimal (done every 3-4 times each year) for regularly brushed Dalmatians. Frequent bathing can only wash off essential oils, leaving their skin/coat flaky and dry.
