Trimming Your Guinea Pig’s Nails

Guinea pigs should have their nails trimmed regularly. This should usually happen every month or two, depending on their age, diet, cage substrate, and activity level. Younger cavies’ nails typically grow faster than older ones’ will. Pets that are getting good diets also have fast-growing nails. Active pigs tend to wear theirs down faster unless they are always on soft bedding.

You can use clippers made for cats’ nails. Either the guillotine-type or the scissor-style ones are fine. If you have a helper, have that person hold your furry buddy. You may find the easiest way to make a burrito by wrapping your pet in a towel. You may only be able to get a few before your pet starts to struggle. That’s fine! The main thing is to make sure you don’t get quick. If you do, use styptic powder to stop any bleeding.
