The Belgian Terv is not often advised for persons who are new to dog ownership. People who have never owned a working dog may well find his demeanor and energy level overpowering. Herding dogs, like the Tervuren, are hardwired to follow a flock of sheep the whole day. That impulse does not go away simply because they are now residing in a household. Every day, the Terv needs an hour of physical activity as well as enough mental activity to prevent him from becoming bored. If he is left alone with his company all day, he is likely to build his own amusement — usually something you will not like and will be costly to fix — or to acquire separation anxiety.
While Terv is intelligent and easily trained, he is an intelligent individual. To train him successfully, you must acquire his respect and trust without using wrath, threats, or brute assault. Despite his confidence and power, the Tervuren is vulnerable, and severe corrections can harm his disposition, sometimes irrevocably. He performs best when strict, reasonable, and consistent guidelines are combined with incentives for appropriate behavior.
