Norwegian Elkhounds are affectionate and loyal. They do well around kids, not to mention they’re friendly toward strangers. However, when it comes to their fellow dogs and other animals, they tend to be aggressive. Proper socialization is essential and should start at puppyhood— be sure to expose them to new dogs and experiences.
These dogs tend to be dominant, though, so training can be challenging. Still, it can be effective and fun, especially with firmness and consistency. As working dogs, Norwegian Elkhounds are independent, intelligent, and energetic, which may overwhelm inconsistent/timid owners. With that, be sure to provide them with a 30-minute exercise two times each day. It also helps fight their food-motivated tendencies that lead to obesity. Mental stimulation is also necessary to prevent boredom.
These dogs do well in apartments, given proper exercise. Still, it will be best if there’s a large, well-fenced yard. While they may be hardy outdoors, Norwegian Elkhounds should live inside the house with the family.
