It can be frequently experienced that whenever a pet dog jumps over the table or on the shelf/counter, it gets some reward. Now the reward can be a treat as some of its favorite snacks or your attention towards your pet. Now when you give your pet a treat over jumping, it positively reinforces this behavior in your pet.
If you want to change this “counter surfing” behavior of your dog, you will need to act collectively with your family. For instance, you should clear all exciting stuff from your tables and counters. Tell your family to not give a treat to the dog on jumping and also do not show attention when it jumps to the counter.
Once you will start reinforcing this behavior, you will observe that your dog will stop jumping as soon as he realizes it is not a rewarding act.
