Portuguese Water Dog Personality

The Porties (short for Portuguese Water Dogs) aren’t only excellent in fetching waterfowl and retrieving lost gear at sea. They have more to offer than being good at water work. His other fascinating qualities include the following:

  • Humorous
  • Fun-loving
  • Tireless
  • Highly clever

A Portie loves to be silly with their humans, showing his clownish side. He excitedly does crazy antics to get everyone’s attention and make people laugh. He’s also intelligent that can be ahead of everyone else. But he matures slowly as compared to other dog breeds.

In general, Porties have varying temperaments – some are lax, some are strong-willed, and some are just in the middle. But like with all other dogs, Porties need early training and socialization. They need exposure to varied people, sounds, sights, and experiences to help them become well-rounded. These dogs are indoors and must live with their humans. They can do well in apartment or condominium units as long as they get enough exercise.
