Interesting Poodle Information

Today, Poodles are widely known as a regal breed – showing off luxury and elegance. But did you know that these dogs once worked as water retrievers? Yes, that’s right. These adorable-looking pups helped hunters fetch waterfowl. This historical experience shows that Poodles are used to living the “hard” life.

The name Poodle came from the Germanic word “pudelin” or “pudel” which implies “to splash in the water.” In France, these dogs are known as “Caniche” from the word “Chien Canard” meaning “duck dog.”

Poodles that worked as water retrievers had a practical coat styling. Their coat on some parts was trimmed to lighten their weight and prevent them from getting stuck in underwater debris. Meanwhile, the coat surrounding their vital organs and joints was kept long to protect them from cold weather and water.

Poodles come in three varieties: Toys, Miniatures, and Standards. The oldest variety among these three is the Standard.
