Things To Consider Before Allowing First-Time Outdoor Access To Your Cat

It will be extremely useful to teach your pet kitten to come when you call her.  Try training your cat by offering her small kitty treats, making responding to your calls a happy experience.  Doing this gives you some control whenever you call her to come inside.

Make sure the day you choose is a dry one if at all possible.  Choose a quiet time outside and supervise your pet outdoors, letting her explore this new environment.  During these first few trips outside you want to avoid or minimize exciting events such as shrieking children, barking dogs, and other cats.  This stops your kitten from getting spooked allowing her to keep focused on you.

Continue supervising your kitten until such time she grows accustomed to your backyard or garden and she can find her way back inside the home easily.  It will be ideal if you continue supervising your kitten whenever she goes outdoors until she is around six months old.  It is important that when she reaches her fourth month that she gets neutered before allowing her unsupervised trips outdoors.

Call your veterinary hospital Shawnee, OK to make sure that your pet’s preventatives and vaccinations are up to date before taking your pet on outdoor excursions.
