Important Reasons Why Dogs Become Depressed

If you have an animal companion, it can be difficult to help your pet if the condition he is experiencing is invisible and only felt inside.  The initial step is to recognize what the problem is.  Canine depression could have several possible causes.

Physical illness

●Most health issues can cause your pet dog to become depressed.  Check with your veterinarian as soon as possible if you suspect that your dog is depressed.  It is vital to first exclude a physical reason why your dog is acting abnormally before things escalate.  Should your veterinarian find a medical problem, be sure to abide by the treatment instructions.  It is hoped that your pet’s depression gets alleviated once the illness is gone.  If not, check with your veterinarian again if more diagnostic examinations are required or if it is suspected to be behavioral in nature.

Grief

●Dogs are also capable of mourning if they lose both animal and human companions like we do.  Like perhaps if a friendly neighbor dog playmate or a member of your household goes away because of death, an extended vacation, or a child in the home grows up and subsequently moves out.  Situations like these cannot be explained to your pet.  The loss of a playmate, most especially one that he is used to encountering in the home can be a very strong reason for depression among dogs.  Perhaps it is not noticed often, but our pets can and do definitely grieve.
