Are White Cats Likely To Be Deaf?

Several studies tried to answer the question of white cats being predisposed to deafness.  It is a popular belief that blue-eyed white cats are likely to be deaf.  However, there is research that indicates about thirty-one percent of cats like these have normal hearing functions.  Seven percent of yellow-eyed white cats are deaf, and just about thirty-seven percent of blue-eyed white cats are deaf, quite less than is believed by most people.

Deafness is not only an issue with blue-eyed cats.  Pure white cats of any breed as well as ones that have different colors of eyes could also be deaf.  White cats that have different colored eyes and are deaf will typically have deafness on the side with the blue-colored eye.

There are cat breeds that could have blue eyes and white furs like the Devon Rex, Maine Coon, Cornish Rex, American Shorthair, and Turkish Angora.  Most people would assume that cats of these breeds might be deaf when born since they have that color fur and eyes, but do note that this does not happen all the time.
